Marks, Masks & Merits: The Performance We Call Education

The Indian education system isn’t as broken as people often say.
It functions. Classes happen. Exams are conducted. Results are declared.
But somewhere inside all of this, learning turns into a performance.
From a young age, students don’t just learn subjects, they learn how to look smart. We memorise answers to write them exactly as expected. We focus on handwriting, presentation, and keywords, sometimes more than understanding. Asking too many questions can feel risky. Staying quiet often feels safer.
School slowly starts to feel like a stage.
Attendance matters more than attention.
Marks matter more than meaning.
Confidence matters more than clarity.
Exams then become the biggest act. They don’t just test what we know, but how fast we write, how well we manage pressure, and how neatly we present our answers. A bad day can make a capable student look weak. A good memory can make shallow learning look like brilliance.
Teachers are part of this too. Many want to teach deeply, but are pushed to finish portions and deliver results. Their work is judged by scores, not growth. Parents and society join in, turning careers into fixed paths and success into a narrow definition.
Over time, students learn to chase marks, not meaning. Passion feels secondary. Rest feels like guilt. Burnout becomes normal.
The real problem isn’t failure. It’s that many students succeed without ever being understood.
Education should be less about proving and more about learning. Less about performance and more about process. Learning is not meant to be perfect or fast. It’s meant to be human.
Maybe change starts when we stop equating marks with worth and silence with discipline.
And start seeing education for what it should be.
A journey, not a performance.
